An update for our Alpha 5 Ecosystem release of Eco: climate sim, new biomes, dynamic plants!
-
We’ve been working hard getting the Ecosystem update ready for Eco Alpha 5 and looking forward to getting feedback from our early backers. We’ve decided to give it a few more weeks of polish and bug-fixing before we send it out, so we’re moving the Alpha 5 date to Oct 24th. Alpha 4 is available now at strangeloopgames.com/eco however, and all buyers will get all future versions (including a Steam key).
Here’s a look at a few of the new things coming in Eco Alpha 5.
Dynamically growing plants:
New biomes, including desert:
Biomes are driven by the underlying ecosystem simulation, which is composed of dozens of individually simulated layers that interact:
Biomes will actually change depending on the climate, and a world wracked with CO2 pollution will have sprawling deserts that take over farmlands.
We’re building ways to view and understand all the connections in this simulation, as doing so will be required in order to successfully build a civilization in the game without bringing the world to ruin. Beyond understanding it yourself, you’ll need to convince others of what is happening and the right course of action for the player-run governments to take. In Eco, climate is not just a scientific challenge but a social one.
Thanks to all our supporters and can’t wait to share what we’re working on in Alpha 5 and on towards beta and launch. Feel free to email with any questions or feedback.

When will it be optimized :(, It saddens me, I bought this with a sense of enjoyment, I see updates, I get excited, remember I cant run it and go cry myself too sleep(not).

How can you not run this, are you playing on a calculator?

Hey high end pc are not performing necessarily any better ;) but yea there is going to be more optimization later.. its just a bit hard to do because the code is still undergoing major changes, thats why not all bugs get fixed always right away etc. Would take to much time and they would end up with the exact same issue again. The general idea is that eco should be able to run on low end systems to (Disclaimer: no promises made here!) because its supposed to be used in school and school environments too
-
Indeed, Schools run even worse systems than I do. I feel like the game is never going to get to a stage of running in schools, it is going to be to laggy
-
Great work guys! I am quite pleased with the advancements that have been made to the game and I look forward to how it will all work together. How the layers interact to create a living ecology in the game. I also hope that in the long run this includes not only Elk, wolves and rabbits. But also everything that a normal biosphere would have. Looking forward to the update later this month (or next if there are complications).

We still good for alpha 5 tomorrow ???
-
Would be an AMAZING surprise of you guys hit us with the update today.......

SWEET !! thank you!

if all your objects look like storage chests, redownload the client. There was a slight bug.
-
@Metachronism Ok, thanks!
-
I'll set up a little private server and give it a whirly whirl.
-
The SLG Debug Alpha 5 server is running. You can test there as well. Post anything glaring you might find and I will try and get it fixed by tomorrows release. There are quite a few animal related fixes pending soon (I think you can't hunt them right now)
-
@Metachronism Great, thanks!

@Metachronism loading world hangs at 40% wont go any further, and redownloaded client after you said something about the tables all looking like chests.
