Eco for Middle School Students

  • Hey all, I wanted to share that over in Santiago, Chile, I'm currently running an after school club with Eco at a local middle school.

It's a really fun journey into the unknown. They're in control of the experience—and I riff on whatever energy they put into the world.

I posted about this the other day in #stories in Discord, but I figure this would be the best place for giving more detailed information and sharing ideas!

If you'd like some server configuration tips for classroom use, please head here next.

Here's a snapshot of how the main area is developing in our 4th week (with 12 weeks to go):

Fitting for a Latin American World, we have a Central Plaza with communal message boards. One day, these messages appeared...

    A divine event

They have founded a Religion in Jimmy Neutron's image. This is their initial shrine to him:

In response, I created a real in-game player/god called Jimmy Neutron. Suffice to say, he was pleased by the worship site:

Authorization to these Heavenly Goods were passed to a Reverent Believer title which was assigned to the player who built the shrine.

In the real world, there's a healthy debate happening about Communism, Socialism, and Capitalism which is really amazing to listen to from a group of 9-13 year olds. Also one citizen is already concerned that resources which could be being used for shooting down the meteor are being spent on religious activity XD

And that's more or less where things are at, for the time being. I'll continue to post updates as we go!

Let me know if you have any questions about this project, or how you could replicate it :-)

  • This is an awesome story, I definitely wish there was a club like this back in my time in school and I'm glad we have a medium to really make this happen. It definitely sounds like you've got a group of young teenagers and personally I'd love to see more updates on where they can take their world and the dynamics they create

  • @ScarecrowNinja Hey thanks a lot!

Wanting this experience when I was a kid is exactly why I'm doing this 😊. Also there's a maddening number of possibilities with the sandpit the developers have made—so it's very interesting to be involved with.

    You're spot on, I've got a group of about 12 6th and 7th graders.

Today I'm giving their World Leader reigns to run our weekly Town Hall Meeting, so I'll let you know how that goes!
